Hi, and welcome to my website, my name is Rachel and for me cooking and baking is something that gets me in touch with my roots. I love baking and ever since I was a little girl I wanted to do something with my love of baking. I started a baking blog named Cakies to keep track of all my baking and keep an online journal of all my recipes for others to enjoy.
However, Cakies only focuses on baking recipes and I also enjoy cooking and am especially interested in cooking dishes from my heritage. I was born and raised in the Netherlands and have influences from Dutch cuisine growing up. Next to being born and raised in the Netherlands, I also have Dutch roots going all the way back to the 1600s which includes several bakers. My main roots are Surinamese though, my father and all my grandparents were born in Suriname, my mom was born in Aruba (Dutch Caribbean) which her parents moved to from Suriname. Which means I also count Aruba and the Dutch Caribbean as my roots.
Recipes that may never be forgotten
I lost one of my grandmothers at age 103 a few years ago. Luckily I had written down several of her recipes before she passed away. I currently have one grandmother left who’s 95 years old (as I am writing this in 2019) who still cooks and bakes! I can see she’s getting older though and I want to learn as much from her when it comes to cooking and baking while she’s still able to teach me. So for the last few years I’ve been taking notes and learning as much as I can from her.
RootzRecipes is a place for me to share recipes from my roots, my heritage, my family. I want to write down all the recipes here that may never be forgotten.
The main focus of the recipes on this website will be recipes from Surinamese and Dutch cuisine as well as Dutch Caribbean cuisine because that’s what I’ve been influenced with most. That said, you’ll most likely will also find recipes here that are from other cuisines due to the fact that they’re a part of Dutch culture, such as Indonesian cuisine. You’ll notice that my website will be a melting pot of recipes from my roots.
I hope you’ll enjoy my recipes and that some of them may even bring back nice memories.
